The Dutch are taller than most other nations, evidence suggests that this is primarily due to their diet. The Dutch share the same height DNA as other western European nations but the facts show that they are the tallest European nation, their diet is considered to be the number one factor in providing that extra height boost over other nations.

So why is the Dutch diet perfect for growth, and what ingredients are key to this phenomenon?

Are Dutch people really taller?

Facts speak for themselves; the average height of a Dutch man is 182.9cm, compared to 176.3cm for American men. That's 6.6cm or over 2.5 inches taller! If you have ever travelled to the Netherlands you will see for yourself how tall Dutch people are! As I've mentioned, the DNA that determines height is no different in Dutch people to other Europeans or North Americans. There's a small argument that the clean environment and high quality of life in the Netherlands provides a small contribution to this height difference, however numerous academics argue strongly that diet is the number reason.

What effect does diet have on height?

Contrary to common belief, our diet plays a huge role on our eventual height. It's crucial that during growth spurts (see human growth velocity), usually between birth to five years and also between 13-15 years, when our height velocity is peaking, diet is taken seriously, as it's more important during these stages of our lives than any other time. These are periods in our life when growth hormone levels are at extremely elevated levels. Growth hormone will not increase our height without adequate nutrition so it's absolutely paramount that during the peak growth stages in our lives that healthy diet is consumed. What is special about the Dutch diet?

The Dutch diet is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. The diets of most nations are usually focuses on carbohydrates, such a potatoes, rice, pasta, whereas the Dutch diet contains high levels of protein. But not only that, the types of protein in common Dutch foods contain a full range of amino acids as they are usuaully derived from milk and meat. The types of food that provide these are milk, cheese, yoghurt and ham. On top of the high protein content, milk based foods are also very rich in vitamins and minerals which assist protein in our growth and development. Protein cannot act on it's own - it needs many other vitamins and minerals to have it's full effect.

Will eating like the Dutch help me grow taller?

It's very likely it will, but only if you are in you are still growing. The younger you are, the more effect it will have. If you've stopped growing then it's too late!
